Cremona String Competition 2015I. ELIGIBILITY
The Competition is open only to violinists, violists, and cellists participating in the 2017 Cremona International Music Academy. While students of the Academy are eligible and welcome to enter the Competition, participation in the Competition is not mandatory.

In order to participate in the Cremona International Competition for Strings, candidates must include the following material in their application:

  • Complete Application Form
  • Copy of candidate's passport or birth certificate
  • Performance resume (no longer than one page)
  • Recent photograph
  • Preliminary Electronic or CD/DVD recording- see Repertoire. Please note: candidate's name should not appear on CD/DVD. Write the name on the CD/DVD case. (CD will not be returned)
  • Non-refundable application fee of $125
  • Non-refundable accompaniment fee of $100

The material must be received no later than April 1, 2017.

 

II. RULES

  1. The competitors will be divided into three age categories (age as of July 15, 2017):

    * Junior Category - up to 12 years old
    * Intermediate Category - 13 to 18 years old
    * Senior Category - 19 years old and above

  2. Cremona String Competition 2015Junior Category:

    * Preliminary Round: Electronic Recording of approx. 10 minutes long (CD/DVD recording are also accepted). Selected candidates will advance to Round Two.
    * Round Two: Cremona - Mini-recital (not to exceed 20 minutes in length)

    Intermediate Category:

    * Preliminary Round: Electronic Recording of approx. 15 minutes long (CD/DVD recording are also accepted). Selected candidates will advance to
    * Round Two, Cremona - First Mini-Recital (not to exceed 15 minutes in length)
    * Round Three, Cremona - Second Mini-Recital (not to exceed 20 minutes in length)

    Senior Category:

    * Preliminary Round: Electronic Recording of approx. 15 minutes long (CD/DVD recording are also accepted). Selected candidates will advance to Rounds Two and Three.
    * Round Two, Cremona - First Recital (not to exceed 15 minutes in length)
    * Round Three, Cremona - Second Recital (not to exceed 30 minutes in length)

  3. Cremona String Competition 2015Proposed repertoire for all rounds must be approved by the Competition committee.
  4. Candidates in Intermediate and Senior Categories are expected to present during both Rounds Two and Three, once they have advanced from the Preliminary Round.
  5. Works from Round Two may not be repeated in Round Three.
  6. All works, except for sonatas, must be performed from memory.
  7. Candidates who have won first prize in previous competitions may NOT compete again in the same age category.
  8. Accompanists - Candidates can perform with their own accompanist or with an accompanist provided by the Competition (accompanist fees may apply).
  9. All rounds of the Competition will be adjudicated by a panel of jury.
  10. The jury has the right to award shared prizes.
  11. The decision of the jury is final and will not be reviewed.
  12. All rounds of the Competition, except for the Preliminary Round, are open to the public.
  13. The Academy reserves the right to cancel the Competition for a category where less than five candidates are selected to advance from the Preliminary Round.

 

III. REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS

Cremona String Competition 2015Junior Category
Preliminary Round - Electronic recording (preferable; CD/DVD recordings acceptable) presenting selected contrasting works of the candidate's choice. The recording must not exceed 10 minutes in length.

Round Two - Cremona, a mini-recital program of the candidate's choice, not to exceed 20 minutes in length, consisting of contrasting works and including:

  • Two contrasting movements from a Baroque Sonata (solo or with piano)
  • One etude or caprice of the candidate's choice.
  • A work or group of works of the candidate's choice.
  • One of the works performed in Round Two should be a work written by an Italian composer.
  • Sonatas may be performed with or without repeats, at candidate's discretion.
  • Concertos may NOT be included in the program.

Intermediate Category
Preliminary Round - Electronic recording (preferable; CD/DVD recordings acceptable) presenting selected contrasting works of the candidate's choice. The recording must not exceed 15 minutes in length.

Round Two - Cremona, First mini-recital program of the candidate's choice, not to exceed 15 minutes in length, consisting of:

  1. One etude or caprice of the candidate’s choice;
  2. Violinists: Two contrasting movements from a solo Sonata or Partita by J.S. Bach or Two contrasting movements from a Telemann Fantasia for solo violin
    Violists and Cellists: Two contrasting movements from a Cello Suite by J.S. Bach or Two contrasting movements from a Baroque Sonata (solo or with piano)

Cremona String Competition 2015Round Three - Cremona, Second mini-recital program of the candidate's choice, not to exceed 20 minutes in length, consisting of:

  1. A work written by an Italian composer.
  2. Violinists: one movement from a Classical Sonata (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven)
    Violists and Cellists: one movement from a Classical or Early Romantic Sonata (Schubert, Stamitz, Hummel, Glinka)
  3. A work or a group of works of the candidate's choice, including a virtuoso piece.
  • Sonatas may be performed with or without repeats, at candidate's discretion.
  • Concertos may NOT be included in the program.

Senior Category
Preliminary Round - Electronic recording (preferable; CD/DVD recordings acceptable) presenting selected contrasting works of the candidate's choice. The recording must not exceed 20 minutes in length.

Round Two - Cremona, First recital program of the candidate's choice, not to exceed 20 minutes in length, consisting of:

  1. One virtuoso etude or caprice of the candidate's choice
  2. Violinists: Two contrasting movements from a solo Sonata or Partita by J.S. Bach or Ciaconna from Partita No. 2
    Violists and Cellists: Two contrasting movements from a Cello Suite by J.S. Bach (one of the movements should be a Prelude)

Round Three - Cremona, Second recital program of the candidate's choice, not to exceed 30 minutes in length, consisting of:

  1. Two movements from a Classical, Romantic, or 20th Century Sonata
  2. A work written by an Italian composer
  3. A work or a group of works of the candidate's choice, including a virtuoso piece
  • Sonatas may be performed with or without repeats, at candidate's discretion.
  • Concertos may NOT be included in the program.

IV. JURY
The competition jury consists of renowned international artists and pedagogues. The names of the jury members will be announced upon the candidate's arrival to Cremona.

V. PRIZES

Junior Category:

  • 1st prize - $300, performance at the Winners Concert in Cremona and Solo Recital in Cremona.
  • 2nd prize - $200 and performance at the Winners Concert in Cremona
  • 3rd prize - $100 and performance at the Winners Concert in Cremona

Intermediate Category:

  • 1st prize - $500, performance at the Winners Concert in Cremona and Solo Recital in Cremona
  • 2nd prize - $300 and performance at the Winners Concert in Cremona
  • 3rd prize - $200 and performance at the Winners Concert in Cremona

Senior Category:

  • 1st prize - $600, performance at the Winners Concert in Cremona and Solo Recital in Cremona
  • 2nd prize - $400 and performance at the Winners Concert in Cremona
  • 3rd prize - $300 and performance at the Winners Concert in Cremona

In addition to monetary prizes, the winners of the Competition will be awarded special tuition scholarships for participation in the Cremona International Music Academy 2018:

  • 1st Prize Winner – 50% Tuition Scholarship
  • 2nd Prize Winner – 25% Tuition Scholarship
  • 3rd Prize Winner – 15% Tuition Scholarship

First Prize Winners of 2017 Competition for Strings will be offered a solo performance with Cremona Festival Orchestra during the Academy 2018
